‘Was that Will Smith?’: Chris Rock jokes after Dave Chappelle attacked on stage
After Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage in Los Angeles by an audience member last night (May 3, 2022), Chris Rock delivered a Will Smith joke, reports The Independent UK.
"Dave Chappelle was just assaulted on stage at his Hollywood Bowl show. He was finishing up his performance when a man ran on-stage and lunged at him knocking him to the floor. Security & his entourage then cornered the man as Dave joked about how him getting "stomped" backstage," US reporter Sharon Carpenter, who was in attendance, tweeted.
After security subdued the man and brought him away, a video posted on Instagram showed Rock joining Chappelle on stage.
"Was that Will Smith?" Rock said on the stage, which made the crowd erupt in a cheer.
Will Smith struck Chris Rock at the Oscars last month when the comedian made a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith's shaved hairstyle.
Smith's actions were widely condemned as a result of the incident. A few days later, he resigned from the Academy.
A video showed Chappelle being joined on stage by Jamie Foxx, whom he thanked for jumping on stage and assisting him after the incident.
"Whenever you're in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff's hat," Chappelle joked.
Following that, Chappelle made a joke about the attacker being a "trans man," which drew backlash on social media.
The Netflix is a Joke festival is scheduled to continue this week.
