‘Jochona Utshob’ to kick off in New York this Friday

"Jochona Utshob" is set to return to Rockaway Beach in New York's Queens borough on Friday (July 31). After a hiatus of several years, the festival's comeback has generated excitement among the Bangladeshi diaspora.

Under the gentle glow of the full moon, nature lovers will celebrate a unique cultural evening featuring dance, music, poetry and recitation. Festival convener and journalist Pinaki Talukdar said the event will begin at 5 pm with a kite-flying session for children by the beach.

Organisers say kite flying is more than just a game—it is a rehearsal for conquering the sky with a spool in hand. Alongside children's laughter and colourful kites filling the sky, the festival will also feature a vibrant cultural programme.

The cultural segment will feature performances by renowned singers Dinat Jahan Munni, Shah Mahbub, Resmi Mirza, Bindu Kona, Baul Melal Karim and Karim Hawlader, as well as emerging artistes Alvan Chowdhury, Sagnik Majumdar and Jerin Maisha, among many others.

Dance performances will be presented by artistes from the Bangladesh Institute of Performing Arts (BIPA), Nrityanjali, and Mrithan Dance Academy. The programme will also include poetry recitations, lyrical performances, Baul music sessions and a variety of other creative presentations.

Chief adviser to the festival and theatre personality Lutfun Nahar Lata said celebrated actress Moushumi, along with several distinguished figures from the cultural arena, will attend the event, adding further prestige to the festival.
The festival will be inaugurated by Dr Nurun Nabi, a New Jersey-elected councilman, distinguished scientist, Ekushey Padak-winning author and valiant freedom fighter.

Admission to the festival is completely free. The children's kite festival is being organised in collaboration with the children's organisation Amra Shishuder Shongi (ASHIS) and Writers Club USA.

Organisers said children will receive free kites and spools, although they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
