Certificates, valuables of 138 students disappeared: Caretaker of hostel remanded

A virtual court in Dhaka today placed a caretaker of Alif Hostel on a one-day remand in a case filed over disappearing certificates and other valuables of 138 students for "not paying rent for three months" during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md Masud-ur-Rahman passed the order after Md Biplob Hossain, a sub-inspector of Kalabagan Police Station and the investigation officer of the case, produced Khorshed Alam before the court with a three-day remand prayer.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Khorshed Alam, a caretaker of Alif Hostel at Purba Rajabazar in Dhaka -- in association with others -- threw out certificates and other valuables of 138 students who lived at the hotel, as they failed to pay rent for three months during the Covid-19 pandemic.

So, he needs to be remanded to find out whereabouts of the house owners and others responsible persons for committing such offences, the IO added.

On the other hand, defence lawyer submitted a petition seeking bail along with cancellation of the remand prayer.

After hearing both the sides, the magistrate rejected his bail petition and placed him on a one-day remand for quizzing about the incident.

One of the victims yesterday filed a case with Kalabagan Police Station against owner, caretaker and several other unknown people for their alleged involvement in committing the offences.

Following the case, police arrested the caretaker but the owner of the house is on the run.
