Pharmacist tests positive for coronavirus in Jamalpur
A 34-year-old pharmacist at Madarganj Upazila Health Complex in Jamalpur has tested positive for coronavirus, the second such case in the district.
Abu Sayeed Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, civil surgeon of Jamalpur, confirmed the matter after he was informed by the microbiology department of Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) this evening.
The pharmacist, a resident of Tangail's Gopalpur Upazila, had been staying at his workplace until he was detected positive for coronavirus, said the civil surgeon.
He has now been shifted to an isolation centre set up at a newly built structure belonging to Sheikh Hasina Medical College in Jamalpur town around 9:30pm, he said.
Samples were collected from the pharmacist and sent to MMC by the local health department this morning after he was suffering from coronavirus symptoms.
The local health department with the help of local administration will now trace people who came in contact with him so that the authorities can send them to quarantine.
The upazila health complex will get disinfected immediately to contain further spread of the virus, the civil surgeon added.
The district administration has declared the district under lockdown effective Thursday morning. No one will exit or enter the district until next directives are given, said Mohammad Enamul Haque, deputy commissioner of Jamalpur.
Earlier, on Sunday a 30-year-old man, a resident of Melandah upazila, tested positive for the virus, the first case in the district.
