Covid-19 cases: India records highest single-day hike
India registered a record single-day hike of 24,879 coronavirus infections, which took the nationwide tally to 767,296 today.
The death toll climbed to 21,129 with 487 more fatalities, reports our correspondent quoting health ministry data.
The number of recovered patients stands at 476,377, which is nearly 62.08 percent of total cases, showing a continuous improvement.
Of the new deaths, 198 are from Maharashtra, 64 from Tamil Nadu, 54 from Karnataka, 48 from Delhi, 23 from West Bengal, 18 from Uttar Pradesh, 16 from Gujarat, 12 from Andhra Pradesh, 11 from Telangana and 10 from Rajasthan among other states.
In the last 24 hours, 262,679 samples have been tested across India, pushing the cumulative number of samples tested so far to 1,04,73,771.
Strict lockdown across eight districts of West Bengal will be enforced for a week from this evening as the state witnessed the highest single-day spike of 986 cases, taking the state's virus count to 24,823, the state health department said in a bulletin late last night.
The state also reported 23 new fatalities, raising the death toll to 827.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee attributed the spike in coronavirus cases to a rise in the number of laboratories testing samples of suspected Covid-19 patients.
"There are over 50 testing laboratories now and 9,000 to 10,000 tests are being conducted every day. Ten percent of them testing positive is quite normal. Since the number of testing, tracing and tracking is increasing, the number of infections is also rising. But there is nothing to be scared of. If you get yourself treated on time, there is nothing to worry about," she added.
