Combating coronavirus: 2,000 more doctors, 4,000 nurses to be recruited, PM assures
Saying that her government has taken various measures for ensuring treatment of Covid-19 patients, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told the parliament today that her government will soon recruit 2,000 more doctors and 4,000 nurses to strengthen the health sector.
"Further 2,000 posts of doctors have been created. We'll recruit 4,000 more nurses too, and I've already given this directive to the health minister. They'll be recruited soon," she said while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for 2020-21 fiscal in parliament.
The premier said the government has already recruited 2,000 doctors and 6,000 nurses in a short time to ensure treatment of Covid-19 patients.
"Besides, 3,000 posts of medical technologists, cardiographers and lab attendants have been created and the recruitment process has started," she said.
Hasina, also leader of the House, said that her government has arranged accommodation in hotels, food and transport for the doctors, nurses and health workers who are directly engaged in treating Covid-19 patients.
Referring to an allegation raised by Deputy Opposition Leader and Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader in the House earlier, Hasina said the expenses of Tk 20 crore for hotel rent and food for staff of a medical college seems "unusual" to her.
"We're investigating it... We'll take action if any irregularity occurred there and anywhere else," she said.
Earlier taking part in the discussion on the proposed budget, GM Quader in his speech raised the issue, saying that doctors and health workers of Dhaka Medical College Hospital spent Tk 20 crore on food and accommodation in hotels which is "suspicious".
Stating that her government is committed to curbing corruption and establishing good governance, Hasina said the government's "zero-tolerance policy" towards corruption will continue and none will be spared in this regard.
Mentioning that the government has been trying to protect the people of the country from the pandemic, Sheikh Hasina said that Covid-19 death rate in Bangladesh is 1.26 percent, while it is 3.08 percent in India, 2.03 percent in Pakistan, 14.03 percent in the UK and 5 percent in the USA.
She said it was possible to keep the death rate low in Bangladesh due to proper measures by the government.
The premier assured that the Awami League government will boldly face whatever crisis emerges in future and ensure that none remains unfed.
Hasina said her government has taken a comprehensive action plan to offset the adverse impacts of Covid-19 on the economy.
