Garment workers went on work abstention and demonstrated by blocking Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Gazipur city for three hours today demanding their due salaries and allowance.
Traffic movement was disrupted and passengers suffered immensely due to the blockade in Dakkhin Salna area, our Gazipur correspondent reports.
Gazipur's Assistant Superintendent of Industries Police Abdul Monayem confirmed this.
He said, policemen rushed to the spot and tried to negotiate with the factory authorities but could not do so.
Police also tried to remove the blockade but the agitated workers did not withdraw it and vandalised windowpanes of 35-40 vehicles. They also hurled brick chips targeting at the policemen, leaving several of them injured, the ASP said.
At one stage, police fired several rounds of teargas shells to disperse the demonstrators and took control over the situation, he further said.
Vehicular movement returned to normal, he said.
Several agitating workers said factory authorities assured to give the arrears but did not pay them.
They fixed September 25 to pay the arrears but did not. Later they again fixed several dates to pay the due salries but did not do. So, the workers went for work abstention today and blocked the road, according to the demonstrators.
