Indian classical theatre festival in Dhaka
A five-day Indian classical theatre festival, featuring five classic Sanskrit plays by five troupes from India, will begin on May 10 at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
Troupes from different Indian cities like Mumbai, Amritsar, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Imphal will stage Sanskrit plays "Mohe Piya", "Mitti Ka Gadira", "Karnabharam", "Shakutanlam" and "Urubhangam" respectively in the festival.
The festival has been jointly organised by Cultural Affairs ministry and Delhi-based National School of Drama, as part of the cultural exchange programmes between the two countries, according to Cultural Affairs minister Asaduzzaman Noor.
"Five Indian popular troupes will stage classic Sanskrit plays directed by renowned directors, which will help local theatre activists and viewers get ideas about classic Indian theatre, which is occasionally performed these days," said the minister, emphasising more such collaborations in future.
Mumbai-based troupe Rangpeeth will stage "Mohe Piya" on the opening day of the festival on May 10. Amritsar-based Mang Rangmanch will stage "Mitti Ka Gadira" on the following day; Kochi-based troupe Lokadharmi Theatre will stage "Karnabharam" on the third day; Thiruvananthapuram-based troupe Sopanam will stage "Shakutanlam" on the penultimate day and Imphal-based troupe Chorus Repertory Theatre will stage "Urubhangam" on the last day.
National School of Drama has taken the initiative to organise such Sanskrit theatre festivals in Dhaka and other SAARC countries, said Dhaka University's theatre department professor Israfil Shaheen, who is coordinating with NSD from Bangladesh.
"Some workshops on Sanskrit theatre, which is taught as academic courses in all theatre departments at Bangladeshi universities, will be organised during the festival for the local theatre activists," Shaheen added.
