Mofakkhar laid to rest

Law-enforcing agencies were on the alert to avert any untoward happening as a large number of people had thronged his village home at Nizampur in Fenchuganj upazila since Sunday night to have a glance of a man whom even many of his kinsmen have never seen.

Mofakkhar Chowdhury alias Mofa was arrested in Dhaka and killed in 'crossfire' with Rab on Friday night in Kushtia.

A freedom fighter, he was the first to hoist the national flag in December 1971 in the Fenchuganj Fertilizer Factory area, family sources said.

Locals said Mofa, a bachelor, was known as a donor to the poor people of his area although many of them never saw him.

In the last gesture of benevolence, the outlandish man--top-listed by law-enforcing agencies because of leading the outlawed Parba Banglar Communist Party in the name of an armed revolution--sold out his paternal land to help the poor and his party.

The sources said he sold a plot of land for Tk 3 lakh and donated one lakh out of the money in aid of the poor.

During the liberation war, the collaborators of Pakistani forces tried but failed to capture Mofa and picked up his brother, MI Chowdhury, and tortured, the sources said.
