'Talash', 'Golap Sangraha' best books of the year

Shahin Akhtar and Abdush Shakur received the award for their creative and reflective writings 'Talash' and 'Golap Sangraha' respectively.

A jury board with Prof Zillur Rahman Siddiqui as president nominated the two books as the best books of the year.

The other members of the board were Shawkat Ali, Hayat Mamud, Abdul Mannan Syed and Ferdous Azim.

Prof Zillur Rahman handed over the crest, certificate and a check for Tk 50 thousand to each awardee.

The Prothom Alo introduced the award this year for two best books to be published in every Bangla year in the country.

Motiur Rahman, editor of the Prothom Alo, said his paper had always wanted to raise hopes and aspirations in the minds of the people in the midst of the news of despair and distress.

He said, "Bangladesh is doing well in many sectors and the Prothom Alo will continue to be a partner in progress."

Shahin Akhtar, author of Talash, said the award is an honour for the women who were violated by Pakistani occupation forces during the War of Liberation in 1971.

A large number of writers, cultural personalities and intellectuals including

Syed Abul Moksed, Tareq Masud, Rafiq Azad, Shawkat Ali, Shahdin Malik, Ramendu Majumdar, Khondoker Ashraf Hossain, Mohammad Samad, Abul Hasnat attended the function held at Hotel Sheraton in the evening.

Prof Anisuzzaman of Dhaka University, Sultana Kamal of Ain O Salish Kendra, former finance minister AMA Muhit, Sub-editor of The Prothom Alo Sumona Sharmin and Maleka Begum were also present.

Besides, publishers of different publishing houses including Ahmed Mahmudul Haque of Mawla Brothers attended the function.
