STAR Day At A Glance| Thursday, October 26, 2017

A piece of land protruding into Kalyanpur canal is a portion of the water body filled illegally by grabbers. The place has now become a rickshaw garage and home for people. In Dhaka city, water bodies are shrinking fast, chiefly because of the grab of encroachers getting wider without hindrance. Thought there have been occasional drives by law enforcers and authorities concerned against the grabbers, these have been proved mostly futile because in most cases such structures return shortly afterwards. PERSISTENTLY WATERLOGGED! Rain or shine, this road in front of the capital’s RamnaKalimandir always remains under water. Thousands of people have to suffer every day because of this. Not only have the commuters become a victim of a poor drainage system, businesses were hurt as well since the area has become less accessible. Local people say the situation has been persisting for the last few months and they took the issue to the authorities, but it did not work. The photo was taken on October 25, 2017.
