The investigation officer (IO) of the case filed in connection with the killing of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu, wife of former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter, said he got some “vital information” after “quizzing” Babul.

“He (Babul) disclosed some vital information which would help in advancement of investigation,” IO Mohammad Kamruzzaman, also an additional deputy commissioner (DB) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, told The Daily Star today.

“On my request, he came to my office on Thursday,” the IO said.

Kamruzzaman further said, “I had talks with Babul Akter several times over phone and I was requesting him to come to my office as there are some issues which I did not want to discuss over telephone.”

On June 5, bike riding assailants waylaid SP Babul’s wife Mitu at OR Nizam Road near GEC intersection in the city while she was going to board her son to his school bus from their residence. Later, they stabbed and shot Mitu to death and fled from the spot. Babul filed the murder case which the Detective Branch (DB) of CMP is investigating at present.

During the three-hour interrogation, Babul was asked about the main suspect, Kamrul Sikder alias Musa, the IO said. In reply, Babul said he knew Musa for many years. “They had a very intimate relation,” the IO said quoting Babul.

Musa reportedly worked as a source of Babul. The IO said Babul became emotional while he was being “quizzed”. Babul also wanted to know about the headway of the case, the IO said.

After coming out of the IO’s office, he boarded on his car and left the place, said eye witnesses.

The IO said Babul might be called in the future. He said he also had talks with Mitu’s father Mosharraf Hossain, who is also a former police officer and resides in Dhaka, over phone.

“I have requested him to come to my office as I need to talk to him on some vital issues,” he said.

When asked about the headway of investigation, Kamruzzaman said the investigation has crossed the “half way”.

“We have arrested seven accused so far but some more accused including Musa are absconding,” he said, adding, “Our intelligence wing is working to arrest the accused.”

“I will try to submit charge-sheet as soon as possible,” said Kamruzzaman without mentioning any deadline.

Mentionable, police quizzed Babul for around 15 hours after “lifting” him from his father-in-law’s house at Banashri in the capital on June 24 midnight. Later police said Babul gave resignation from his post. After that Babul claimed he did not give resignation “willingly”.

He reportedly applied to the ministry of Home Affairs for withdrawal of resignation on August 9. On September 6, a gazette notification from the ministry of Home Affairs says, “Babul Akter has been terminated from his job upon his application.”
