The records broken and milestones reached
The second day of the first Test against New Zealand in Wellington has been a day of glory for Bangladesh cricket, as the 359-run fifth-wicket stand between Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim, and a double-century by the former, broke a few records and led to the batsmen traversing a few milestones. Here is a quick look at the best of them:
-- Mushfiqur Rahim hit Kane Williamson for a six over long on in the 115th over to take the fifth-wicket partnership with Shakib Al Hasan from 311 to 317, in the process establishing Bangladesh’s highest Test partnership for any wicket. The previous highest was Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes’s opening stand of 312 against Pakistan at home in April 2015.
-- When Mushfiqur hit a boundary in the 122nd over bowled by Boult he brought up the 341st run of the fifth-wicket partnership with Shakib, taking them to fourth spot in the highest partnerships for that wicket in Test history.
-- Shakib and Mushfiqur’s 359-run fifth-wicket stand is the highest for that wicket in Tests in New Zealand, beating the previous highest between Nathan Astle and Craig McMillan against Zimbabwe in the Boxing Day Test of 2000.
-- The partnership is the fourth highest for any wicket in New Zealand. Mushfiqur’s single in the 125th over took the partnership past 353 runs, overtaking BJ Watling and Brendon McCullum’s sixth-wicket stand against India in Wellington in February 2014.
-- When he dabbed a Mitchell Santner delivery through point to move to 71 in the afternoon session of the second day of the first Test against New Zealand, Shakib Al Hasan reached 3,000 Test runs -- the third Bangladesh batsman after Habibul Bashar and Tamim Iqbal to cross the landmark.
-- When he reached 98, Shakib notched his 3,027th run, thereby going past Habibul Bashar to become the second-highest run-scorer for Bangladesh in Tests. Only Tamim Iqbal, with 3,405 runs is ahead of Shakib now.
-- Shakib became the third Bangladeshi to notch a double hundred when he steered a four past point off Colin Grandhomme in the 125th over. Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim are the two others to have achieved the feat.
-- A few overs later Shakib took a single off Boult in the 128th over and moved to 207, the highest individual score for Bangladesh, beating Tamim Iqbal's 206 against Pakistan in Khulna in April 2015.
