4 killed as landslides hit Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar

Four people were buried alive when landslides hit Khagrachhari and Moulvibazar districts early today.

Two siblings were killed in Khagrachhari landslide while a woman and her daughter killed in Moulvibazar, local correspondents report quoting police. 

In Khagrachhari, two brothers -- Nur Nabi, 13, and Hossain, 7, of Patachhara union were asleep when a huge chunk of mud collapsed on their house at Gudamchhara village around 6:00am, our local correspondent reports quoting police.

Later, family members along with locals recovered their bodies, said Syed Md Farhad, additional superintendent of police (Ramgarh circle).

The other members of the family were safe, the police official said.

In Moulvibazar, a mother and her teenage daughter were killed in a landslide triggered by torrential rain in Borolekha upazila.

Achhia Begum, 35, wife of Abdus Sattar of Dimai village, and her daughter Fahmida Begum, 13, were killed when a big chunk of mud fell on their earthen house on a hill around 3:00am, said Sirajuddin, a ward member of Sadar union.

After an hour of frantic effort, locals pulled out the bodies of the mother and the daughter, he said.

Achhia’s son survived the disaster as he was visiting a relative’s house, the UP member said.

It has been raining hard in the district since yesterday submerging most of the roads, he said.

Azad Rahman, project implementation officer of Borolekha upazila, also confirmed the incident.

At least 153 people, including army men, women and children, were killed in the landslides that hit hilly districts -- Rangamati, Chittagong, Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar – on Monday.
