Ransomware attack affects 30 personal computers in Bangladesh

At least thirty computers were reportedly affected so far in Bangladesh by the global ransomware attack, which affected computers in nearly 100 countries on Friday, said a non-government research organisation.

Crime Research and Analysis Foundation disclosed the figure based on e-mails sent to them by the affected people, Tanvir Hasan Zoha, advisor of the organisation, told The Daily Star today.

"This is not the real picture, and I have information that the numbers is higher, but so far we could confirm only 30 by the computer owners," IT expert Zoha said.

Two private television channels were also on the affected list, Zoha said, but he denied to disclose the names.

"Many organisations, are trying to hide the information considering that it may hamper their reputation," Zoha added.

Earlier, The Daily Star found four of Asian TV desktops affected by the global cyber attack that occurred Friday evening. Faria Hossain, a joint news editor of the channel, also acknowledged it. 

Zoha also mentioned that only Windows are affected by the Ransomware.

Earlier another expert Sumon Ahmed Sabir, chief strategy officer of international internet gateway Fibre@Home, told The Daily Star that users can take offline backup for their documents and also asked the computer users not to open any unwanted files that may come through email.
