Myanmar’s actions not credible, impartial: OHCHR

Myanmar has failed to meet minimal standards of credibility or impartiality, despite assurances that it will investigate allegations and prosecute alleged perpetrators in conflicts across the country including persecution of Rohingyas, alleged OHCHR today.

"Due to continuing refusals to permit access, OHCHR, the country Special Rapporteur and the Fact-Finding Mission have conducted remote monitoring," the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said at the 38th session of the Human Rights Council's opening statement and global update of human rights concerns.

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stressed the need for monitoring human rights situation on the ground during repatriation of Rohingya refugees to Myanmar.

"In the context of the MoU that the Government of Myanmar has established with UNDP and UNHCR for the repatriation of Rohingya refugees from Bangladesh, I reiterate that no repatriation should occur in the absence of sustained human rights monitoring on the ground, in the areas concerned," Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said.
