Midday Brief, Friday, October 5, 2018

The electoral symbol of the ruling Awami League, the boat, has become inescapable in the city right before election time. In defiance of the Graffiti Writing and Poster Sticking Control Act, 2012, passed by parliament with Awami League in office, nomination seekers, members of AL and their allies, have resorted to plastering the city with their pictures. The Dhaka South City Corporation Mayor Mohammad Syed Khokon, one of those tasked with ensuring the law is upheld, also appears in some of the posters. Officials at the two city corporations claim to be helpless under political pressure and the city's walls continue to become eyesores. Photo: STAR
