The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has fined ticketing platform shohoz.com Tk 2 lakh – for its negligence in the process of selling tickets.

The fine was imposed after a hearing on the allegation of negligence brought by Dhaka University student Mohiuddin Roni, said DNCRP Director General AHM Shafiquzzaman in a press briefing today (July 20, 2022).

Shohoz's negligence has been proven in the hearing, said the DG.

Shohoz will have to pay Tk 2 lakh within five working days, he added. Roni will get 25 percent (Tk 50,000) of the entire fine amount, the DG said.

"They (Shohoz) were also asked to submit a report to DNCRP on how they operate the whole online ticketing system," he added.

Talking to reporters, Shohoz's lawyer Mirza Ragib Hasnat said they disagreed with the verdict. "We will challenge this verdict," he said.

Mohiuddin Roni expressed satisfaction over the verdict.

"It was one of my six demands to reform the railway system. I will continue demonstrating for the rest of my demands," Roni said.

After a photo of him demonstrating was published in The Daily Star, the High Court earlier in the day wanted to know about it.

The court asked Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik and Anti-Corruption Commission's lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan to inquire about Mohiuddin Roni's protest and inform about it.

On June 13, Roni – a student of DU Theatre and Performance Studies department – failed to book train tickets online but the fare was deducted from his mobile banking account.

Though he contacted the respective authorities, but didn't get his ticket.

Later, the DU student filed two complaints with the DNCRP on June 14 and 15.

On July 7, he started protesting alone to press home six-point demands for an end to irregularities and mismanagement in Bangladesh Railway.

The demands include stopping mismanagement in selling tickets through shohoz.com, taking action in case of any irregularity, stopping ticket sales in black market and ensuring equal number of tickets available both online and offline.
