Tripura Chief Minister of India Dr Manik Saha has sent 750kg of pineapples to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, keeping the spirit of fruit diplomacy alive with the neighbouring country.

Dr Dipak Baidya, assistant director of Tripura Horticulture Department handed over the pineapples to Manish Singh, attaché of the Indian Assistant High Commission in Chattogram this (July 14) morning at the Integrated Check Post in Brahmanbaria's Akhaura upazila, reports our Brahmanbaria correspondent.

The total number of pineapples sent in 100 cartons was 600 pieces.

Three weeks after PM Hasina sent "Amrapali" mangoes, the Tripura state government decided to send pineapple, the state fruit, as a "return gift".

The "Kew" variety of pineapple is very popular in the domestic market of Tripura. The pineapple has been exported to countries like Dubai and Qatar and has received a very good response, Baidya told The Daily Star.

The gift will be sent to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina through the Indian High Commission in Dhaka, said Singh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent 800 kg of "Amrapali" mangoes to Manik Saha and other dignitaries of the state on June 20.

Earlier last month, continuing her mango diplomacy, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sent one metric tonnes of Amrapali mangoes to Indian President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as gift.
