Assaulting woman for wearing "indecent clothes": Man held in Narsingdi

Police have arrested a man, three days after a young woman was physically assaulted by some people at Narsingdi railway station for wearing what they claimed "indecent clothes".

Ferdous Ahmed, officer-in-charge (OC) of Bhairab Railway Police Station, confirmed that the man was arrested from Narsingdi town around 9pm yesterday (May 20, 2022. Ferdous Ahmed.

Arrested Ismail Hossain (38) is a resident of Narsingdi Sadar, the OC said.

Meanwhile, Narsingdi Railway Station Master ATM Musa told The Daily Star that district administration conducted a mobile court in the station area yesterday afternoon and collected footages from close circuit cameras set up at various places to detain the accused.

Narsingdi station master ATM Musa told The Daily Star that the incident happened around 5 am Wednesday (May 18, 2022). A scuffle took place when some women at the station objected to a young woman wearing "indecent clothes".

It came to light after a video of the incident went viral on Facebook.

According to the witnesses, two young men and a young woman were waiting for the train at Narsingdi railway station platform. The woman was dressed in jeans and sleeveless tops.

An old man made indecent comments about the dressing of the woman and one of the two who was with the victim got locked into an altercation with the man.

By this time, an old woman joined them came there and started throwing abuse words regarding her dress up. Then a few more men joined them.

At one stage, some unruly youths started beating up the two young men and assaulted the woman.

Later, the woman was forced to run into the station master's room and take shelter. Later, when the situation calmed down, she left.

The station master also added that they were passengers of Chittagong Mail train at the station. It was not possible to get their identities as they boarded the train immediately.

Contacted, Abul Bashar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Narsingdi District Detective Branch of Police said, "The matter was being seriously investigated by the district police along with the railway police."
