RU professor killing: Teachers observe 1-hr work abstention

Teachers of Rajshahi University observed a one-hour work abstention today demanding punishment to the killers of Prof AFM Rezaul Karim Siddiquee.

Starting from today, Rajshahi University Teachers Association (Ruta) will observe the one-hour work abstention from 11:00am every day until the killers are bought to book, said Ruta President Prof Md Shahidullah.

Though the teachers are attending classes, most of the students are boycotting classes seeking justice the professor the correspondent added.

Public university teachers across the country will stay away from work for three hours and stage demonstrations on May 2, demanding trial of the killers of Prof Rezaul.

The Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers Association (FBUTA) also announced to hold a countrywide protest rally on May 2, the Ruta president said.

The students of the RU English department will meet the additional commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan to hand over a memorandum demanding the arrest of the killers.

Siddiquee, who was teacher of English department, was brutally murdered in Shalbagan area of Rajshahi city. Militant group Islamic State reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack.
