Quader welcomes Uber

Needs to follow systematic procedures to continue service, he says

Welcoming the newly introduced on-demand smart phone-based transportation service, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader today said Uber needs to follow some systematic procedures to continue its service in Bangladesh.

“It’s a positive aspect from digitalisation perspective. But the service providers need to follow some systematic procedures,” Quader, also the general secretary of ruling Awami League, said while launching a road safety campaign at Banani in Dhaka.

The minister came up with remarks a day after Bangladesh Road Transport Authority declared Uber illegal saying the company did not take permission for running the service in the country.

In an advertisement published in several dailies, the BRTA said operating any taxicab service without permission from it or the government was totally illegal and a punishable offence.

Uber was gaining popularity among the Dhaka's commuters after its official launching in partnership with the country's leading telecom operator Grameenphone on Tuesday.

It is an online platform that connects people to facilitate transportation through a mobile application.

The service of the US-based firm can come as a relief for many in Dhaka where commuters suffer every day due to lack of transport. And Uber came when the existing taxi services failed to gain popularity due to unavailability and high fare.
