Attacking Navy official: Erfan Salim, his bodyguard on 3-day remand

A Dhaka court today placed Erfan Salim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Salim, and his bodyguard Zahidul Mollah on three-day remands each in a case filed on charges of assaulting a navy official in the capital's Dhanmondi area.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Nur passed the order after Ashfaq Rajib Hasan, inspector (investigation) of Dhanmondi Police Station and also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Before that, the two were shown arrested in the case following a prayer submitted by the IO.

In the remand prayer, the IO said Erfan, along with his associates,assaulted a navy official without any reason and they need to be remanded to find out vital clues about the incident and know whereabouts of others responsible, the IO added.

On the other hand, the defence submitted a petition seeking bail and cancellation of the remand prayer saying that there were no specific allegations against the accused.

Upon hearing both sides, the magistrate turned down their bail petitions and issued the remand order.

Lt Wasif Ahmad Khan of Bangladesh Navy filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station on October 26, accusing Erfan and four others named and three unnamed for assaulting him in the capital.

Erfan and Zahidul were sentenced to one year in prison on Monday for illegally possessing walkie-talkies and foreign liquor.
