Havoc in haor: Sunamganj WDB engineer withdrawn

An executive engineer of Water Development Board in Sunamganj was withdrawn today amid allegations of corruption in the construction and repairing works of the embankment surrounding the haor areas.

Afsar Uddin has been withdrawn from Sunamganj and attached to the WDB head office in Dhaka, our Sylhet correspondent reports quoting Md Abdul Hai, acting chief engineer of WDB Sylhet office.

Boro crop, the only cultivation of the Sunamganj’s haor area, was submerged by the heavy rain and flash flood hits on 29 March this year, only 15 to 20 days before the harvest.

Since then, locals have been pointing fingers at the irresponsibility and corruption of the WDB officials for the misery of the haor farmers.

The Anti-corruption Commission on Thursday formed a probe committee to find the facts behind the havoc in haor.

Moreover, another two separate committees have been formed by the Ministry of Water Resources and Bangladesh Water Development Board in this connection, the chief engineer also said.
