Muggers killed Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mizanur Ranman Talukder after realising that he was a high-ranking police official, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit Chief Monirul Islam said today.

“They picked up Mizanur in a private car for mugging but decided to kill him after realising that he was a high-ranking police official,” he said at a press briefing at the police headquarters today.

The briefing was organised a day after detectives arrested one Shah Alam alias Alam alias Budda from Tongi, on the outskirts of Dhaka, in connection with the murder.

“Shah Alam admitted to his involvement in the murder in primary interrogation,” Monirul said.

Mizanur Rahman, 50, an ASP of Savar highway circle, was killed by unidentified assailants hours after he left his Uttara residence to join work at Kaliakoir in Gazipur on June 21 this year.

Masum Talukder, the younger brother, filed a murder case with Rupnagar Police Station accusing some unnamed persons.

In primary interrogation, Shah Alam said he and three other persons -- Faruk, Kamal and Mintu -- took part in the killing, the CTTC chief said at the briefing.

“Among them Mintu, who was on the back seat, hit Mizanur in his head and one of them strangulated him with a piece of jhut (garment factory wastes),” the counter terrorism boss further said.

They later dumped his body near Birulia Bridge in Savar, he added.

According to the inquest report, the body bore marks of injuries on the forehead and left and right cheeks. There was also a red mark around his neck.
