New CJ for coordination among 3 state organs

Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain today said he will always try to coordinate among the functions of three organs of the state.

The justice said he will do everything possible for him to strongly establish the rule of law and to ensure justice for all.

“A country can go forward to the way of its development through mutual cooperation among the three organs of the state -- legislative, executive and judiciary. If there is any lack of cooperation among these organs, the development is hampered” he said.

He came up with the comments after he joined office this morning as the 22nd chief justice of the country.

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Advocate Zainul Abedin accorded a felicitation to the new chief justice at the court room of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

“We will have to build up image of the court in such a manner so that the people can feel that they are all equal and they will get justice from the court in accordance with the law. Therefore, faith and confidence of the people towards the court will be stronger,” he said.

The formulation of a law for appointing the judges under Article 95 (2) (C) of the Constitution is an inevitable under the present context, he added.

“The backlog of the cases is a big problem. We have to work unitedly to solve this problem. Sincere assistance from the bar association is also necessary to this effect,” he said.

President M Abdul Hamid administered his oath at the Darbar Hall of the Bangabhaban.

Chief Justice Mahmud, a senior judge of the Supreme Court, was appointed as the chief justice of the country on Friday, superseding Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, who had been discharging duties of the chief justice for the last four months.
