Cesare Tavella

A Dhaka court today issued arrest warrant for absconding BNP leader MA Quayum in a case filed over murder of Italian national Cesare Tavella last year.

Metropolitan Magistrate Saddir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury today passed the order after taking the charges into cognisance against Quayum and six others.

Additionally, the court directed officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station to report on progress of arrest of Quayium, BNP’s Dhaka city unit’s joint convener, by August 16.

It also issued arrest warrant against Sohel alias Bhangari Sohel, one of the accused in the case.

The other accused are Quayum's brother Abdul Matin, Tamjid Ahmed Rubel, Russell Chowdhury, Minhajul Arefin, also known as Bhagne Russell and Shakhawat Hossain Sharif. They are now in jail.

Tavella, an aid worker, was killed in the capital's Gulshan diplomatic zone on September 28 last year. Islamic State claimed the responsibility of the murder.

On June 28, detectives submitted a charge sheet against seven people to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka.
