‘Drug smuggler’ killed in Ctg ‘gunfight’

Firearms, 2-lakh Yaba tablets recovered

An alleged drug smuggler was killed in what law enforcers said a “gunfight” between criminals and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in Chittagong city early morning today.

The deceased has been identified as Md Faruk Hossain alias Baitta Faruk, 42, from Potia area of Chittagong, Rab told The Daily Star.   

Faruk was a well known drug smuggler in the area and an accused in total of 18 cases, quoting Ashekur Rahman, deputy commander of Rab-7, our Chittagong correspondent reports.

Acting on a tipoff, a team of Rab 7 went to Barisal Colony on Ice Factory Road under Sadarghat Police Station where Faruk and his associates were holding up around 2:00am, the Rab official said.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers the ‘criminals’ started firing at them and the gunfight ensued, he added.  

Later, bullet hit body of Faruk was recovered from the spot and was rushed to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared him dead.

The other accomplices of Faruk managed to flee from the spot, he added.

Rab also recovered two foreign pistols, a shooter gun and two lakh pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.
