A policeman has been closed for negligence in duty over the baby’s death in Jatrabari yesterday during a snatching attempt on a moving rickshaw.

The incident site was close to a police check post led by Assistant Sub-Inspector Badrul Alam, said Anisur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station, today.

ASI Badrul has been closed and attached to Wari division deputy commissioner’s office and will be waiting a formal investigation into the matter, the OC told The Daily Star.

Five-month-old Arafat was on the lap of his mother when snatchers tried to grab her purse on a moving rickshaw around 6:00am yesterday. The baby fell from the rickshaw and died.

“Since a police check post was just 50 yards from the incident spot, it falls under the jurisdiction of the check post,” said Iftekharul Islam, assistant commissioner of Demra zone Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Morgue sources have said the baby, Arafat, died of brain hemorrhage sustained from the injuries of the fall. A murder case has been filed with Jatrabari Police Station in this regard.
