Group with vested interests trying to take advantage of SUST movement, DU teachers suspect

A third party is trying to take advantage of the students' movement at the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) which is demanding the resignation of its Vice-Chancellor Prof Farid Uddin Ahmed, Dhaka University Teachers Association (DUTA) said in a statement today.

A vested quarter has been trying to divert the students' ongoing movement to a movement against the government, the statement read.

Expressing a grave concern over the situation centring the movement, the DUTA called on the government to ensure an education-friendly environment at the university through discussions.

"We are deeply concerned over the demonstrating students' health and overall situation arising from the movement. So, we called on the authorities concerned to take measures for the students' security," they said.

The teachers also wanted an investigation over the matter that the students demanded the VC's resignation even though the provost of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall had resigned.
