JU BCL identifies activists who tortured journo, relieves them from student politics

Jahangirnagar University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) identified eight activists who reportedly called a journalist to a guest room and tortured him last night (August 2, 2022).

The abused journalist is a second-year student of the university's journalism and media studies department.

The torture took place at the university's Rabindranath Tagore Hall at midnight. The journalist claimed that some of the university's student activists tortured him in that room, reports our JU correspondent.

Soon after the incident, the university's BCL leaders and journalists went there. They listened to the victim and abusers.

Akhteruzzaman Sohel, president of JU BCL unit, initially conducted a "cross-check" and announced the names of eight as the abusers. They are Asad Haque, Arif Zaman Shezan, Ziad Mirza, Hasibul Hasan Rishad, Raihan Bin Habib, Muntasir Ahmed Tahrim, Masum Billah, and Zahid Hasan.

Confirming they were BCL activists, he said that they have been relieved.

"We don't want these activists to be involved in student politics from now on," he added.

One of the eight students, who did not want to be named, said, "On what basis did they give out my name? The matter has become one-sided."

Rabindranath Tagore Hall provost Abdullah Hel Kafi said this morning (August 3, 2022), "I learned about the incident today. I'm looking into the matter."

Acting proctor of the university, Firoz-ul-Hasan, said, "The decision taken by the hall administration in this regard will be considered as the decision of the university administration."

The current vice-chancellor of the university, Prof Dr Nurul Alam, did not receive calls for comments.
