Dhaka University Teachers' Association President Prof Md Rahmat Ullah, also dean of Law Faculty, has been temporarily relieved of academic and administrative activities after showing respect to Khandaker Mushtaque, one of the chief conspirators behind the assassination of Bangabandhu.

The decision came from a syndicate meeting of the university with DU Vice Chancellor Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman in the chair today, reports our DU correspondent quoting Syndicate Member Prof Humyan Kabir.

In the meeting, a five-member probe committee, headed by Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof ASM Maksud Kamal was formed to investigate the incident, said Prof Humyan Kabir.

Next step would be taken based on the investigation report, added the syndicate member.

Rahmat Ullah spoke on Mushtaque at a discussion organised by the DU administration at TSC auditorium on Mujibnagar Day (April 17).

Later, he apologised -- terming what sounded like praising Mushtaque as "inadvertent".

"Probably Prof Rahmat Ullah inadvertently said this. In the same speech, he (Rahmat Ullah) showed utmost abhorrence to Mushtaque. It is understood that it may have come out inadvertently," DU VC told The Daily Star on April 17.
