CMC suspends 7 BCL leaders

The academic council of Chattogram Medical College (CMC) in a meeting yesterday suspended seven Chhatra League (BCL) activists of CMC unit on different terms over torturing four students in the college hostel on February 8.

Earlier, the probe body led by CMC Vice Principal Prof Dr Hafizul Islam found them guilty during investigation.

Of the students given punishment, Avijit Das, CMC 59th batch, was suspended for three years, Riazul Islam, 5th year student, and Saurav Devnath and Saju Das, both fourth year students, were suspended for two years.

Meanwhile, Mahin Ahmed, Ibrahim Khalil and Sayel, also fourth year students, were suspended for one and half an year, said CMC principal Prof Dr Shahena Akter.

On February 8, a group of BCL activists tortured four students at CMC hostel. Of them, two were admitted to ICU at CMCH while two others received primary treatment.

"We have received the report of probe body and sat in a meeting to make a decision as per the recommendations of probe body today," said Prof Dr Shahena, also chairman of CMC Academic Council.

Contacted, Avijit Das declined to make any comments on the punitive action taken against them.
