Youth held from Dhaka over Jubo League activist’s death in Patuakhali

A youth has been arrested in connection with the death of Jubo League activist Tapas Das, who was killed in a clash between two factions of Awami League in Baufal upazila of Patuakhali on May 24.

A team of detective branch (DB) of police arrested Simon, an accused of the murder case, from Babu Bazar area of Dhaka on Sunday, said Sheikh Billal Hossain, additional superintendent of police in Patuakhali.

Law enforcers also recovered a knife, reportedly used in the murder, from a ditch in Baufal town early today, he said.

Tapas was stabbed dead in a clash between supporters of local MP ASM Feroz and Baufal Municipality Mayor and District Awami League Joint General Secretary Md Ziaul Haque Jewel on May 24. Tapash was a follower of MP Feroz.

Tapas's brother Pankaj Das filed a case against Mayor Ziaul Haque Jewel and 35 others, including ABM Mizanur Rahman, a Baufal correspondent of Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

Simon, a resident of Wadud Mia Road in the municipality areas, has been named as the third accused in the case statement.

According to the detectives, Simon, in primary interrogation, confessed to stabbing Tapas with the knife.

In an unverified video, Simon was seen stabbing Tapas with a knife. This video went viral on social media platforms.

Khandar Mustafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Baufal Police Station, said they produced Simon before a court in Patuakhali seeking a 10-day remand prayer. The court, however, sent him to jail saying that the bail petition will be heard later, he added.
