India to buy assault rifles, anti-airfield weapon

India today approved the acquisition of military equipment, including assault rifles from the United States, at an approximate cost of Rs 2,290 crore.

The approval was given by the Defence Acquisition Committee (DAC) at its meeting presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

"To equip the frontline troops of the army, the DAC also accorded approval for procurement of Sig Sauer assault rifles at an approximate cost of Rs 780 crore," the defence ministry said in a statement.

It also greenlighted the procurement of static high frequency trans-receiver radio sets and an anti-airfield weapon.

The HF radio sets are being procured at an approximate cost of Rs 540 crore, while the anti-airfield weapon will cost around Rs 970 crore.

The acquisition comes against the backdrop of India's latest military faceoff with China in Ladakh.
