Jayalalithaa buried with state honours in Tamil Nadu

J Jayalalithaa was buried with full state honours at Marina beach, near to the memorial of her mentor MG Ramachandran.

Thousands of people followed her funeral procession to get a final glimpse of their beloved "Amma" or mother, reports NDTV Online.

Jayalalithaa, 68, died at 11.30 on Monday night, after a huge cardiac arrest the day before. Many top political leaders attended the funeral amid heavy security, with thousands of policemen posted.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid his last respects to Jayalalithaa, and was seen offering condolences to Sasikala Natarajan, her closest aide, who has stood next to the politician's body all day.

Jayalalithaa, affectionately called Amma or mother by lakhs of supporters, made political history earlier this year when she was re-elected for a second consecutive term, a practice alien to Tamil Nadu for three decades.

She was seen as a powerful if authoritarian administrator who maintained a hold over the people's affection despite increasingly rare appearances on account of her health.

Much of her appeal lay in her women-friendly giveaways: free mixer-grinders, laptops and other household goods were used to win voters. The rural poor benefited from her many welfare schemes.
