West Bengal wins battle of Rosogolla

West Bengal today won a two-and-a-half-year-old battle over the origin of one of India's signature sweets "Rosogolla".

India's Geographical Indications (GI) Registry announced that Rosogolla's originating place is Bengal, not the neighbouring state Odisha. Odisha and Bengal have been locked in the feud since 2015 over the origination of the sweetmeat.

The GI under the World Trade Organisation is a sign that identifies a product as originating from a particular place.

"The origin of the famous sweet has been settled under the GI Act which authenticates a product relating to either its geographical location or community or society," reports our New Delhi correspondent quoting Sanjay Bhattacharya, deputy controller of Patents and Designs in Kolkata.

"Sweet news for us all. We are very happy and proud that #Bengal has been granted GI ( Geographical Indication) status for Rosogolla," West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who is in London now, twitted after the announcement.
