’71 war hero Jacob laid to rest

Bangladesh Liberation War hero Lt Gen (retd) JFR Jacob, who died in India yesterday, was buried in New Delhi amidst an outpour of grief and emotions.

Jacob, who negotiated the surrender of Pakistani troops on December 16, 1971 in Dhaka, was laid to rest at a Jewish cemetery on Humayun Road in central Delhi.

Earlier in the day, a host of dignitaries and top politicians, including BJP veteran LK Advani, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, Junior Minister for External Affairs Gen (retd) VK Singh and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Syed Muazzem Ali paid their last respect to Jacob by placing wreaths on the casket containing his mortal remains. 

Officials of Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi were also 'present' at the ceremony.

Chiefs of Indian Army, Navy and Air Force and senior army personnel also paid tribute to Jacob.

Jacob, 92, breathed his last yesterday morning after a prolonged spell of illness.
