India today said its army carried out surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the de facto border with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir last night and several terrorists were killed.

India’s Director General of Military Operations Lt Gen Ranbir Singh said at a press briefing that the security forces had acted after intelligence inputs about terrorists preparing to launch strikes against India, our New Delhi correspondent reports.

"Significant casualties have been caused to terrorists and those trying to shield them in these strikes’and ," Lt Gen Singh said adding, "the operation has now ended."

The surgical strikes by India came ten days after four terrorists had conducted a deadly attack on an Indian camp on September 18 that left 18 troops dead.

Today’s press conference was organized by the Defence Ministry and the Ministry of External Affairs whose spokesman Vikas Swarup was also present.

Lt Gen Singh said Indian security forces have recovered items, including a global positioning system, which has Pakistan markings.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) to review the situation along the line of control.
