Sarkozy's campaign scam charges dropped

French judges yesterday decided not to charge Nicolas Sarkozy over a campaign finance scandal but placed the former president under a special status that leaves the door open for further questioning. They are probing claims the centre-right UMP party -- which Sarkozy now heads -- should not have paid fines levelled against the former French leader after he broke spending limits on his failed campaign for the 2012 presidency.
