War crime accused Akram held
An accused war criminal was arrested by the law enforcers from Rajpara area of Rajshahi city early today.
Akram Hossain Khan, 60, a resident of Morolganj upazila in Bagerhat, went on hiding after an arrest warrant was issued against him by the International Crime Tribunal (ICT)-1 two weeks ago, police sources said.
In a joint drive launched by police and detectives, Akram was arrested from a relative’s house at Rajpara area in Rajshahi city around 2:00am, said Khan Mohammad Erfan, officer-in-charge of Rajpara Police Station.
Acting on a tip-off, police of Morolganj and Rajpara Police Stations and members of Detective Branch (DB) of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police jointly launched the drive in light with the order issued by the ICT-1, the OC added.
Earlier, a victim Nimai Chandra Das of Raghuduttakathi village filed a case against 20-30 men including Akram with Bagerhat court in 2009.
The case was later shifted to the ICT-1 and the agency started investigation on May 21, 2013.
Akram was involved in numerous killings, looting and torching shops at Shakharikathi village on May 5, 1971, said Helal Uddin, assistant superintendent of Police, also the investigation officer of the case.
He also allegedly converted 200 Hindus during the Liberation War, the IO added.
The ICT-1 passed his arrest order on June 10 as the prosecution prayed for his arrest.
