Voting in Tangail by-polls end

Voting in Tangail-8 (Sakhipur-Basail) by-election ended peacefully amid tight security today.

Starting from 8:00am, the voting continued till 4:00pm at 117 polling centres in the constituency without any break.

No violence was reported from any of the polling stations, reports our Tangail correspondent.

People were seen casting their votes amid enthusiastic environment during the by-polls.

Law enforcers including Rapid Action Battalion, police, Border Guard Bangladesh and Ansar were deployed to prevent untoward incidents.

The constituency fell vacant after Awami League (AL) lawmaker Shawkat Momen Shajahan died on January 20.

Shajahan's son Anupom Shajahan Joy of AL, Sadek Siddique of Jatiya Party (Manju), Abdul Malek Miah, a rebel AL candidate, and independent candidate Liakat Ali are contesting the polls.

However, BNP did not take part in the by-election.

A total of voters 3,07,397 in the constituency. Of them, 1,88,320 are from Sakhipur upazila and 1,19,077 are from Basail upazila.

Election Commission identified 102 polling centres out of total 117 in the constituency as risky.
