USTC hospital fined Tk 45 lakh for pollution

The Department of Environment (DoE) yesterday fined the authorities of University of Science and Technology Chittagong Hospital Tk 45.5 lakh for polluting the environment through discharging liquid waste, said a press release.
Contacted, Zafor Alam, director of DoE, Chittagong said the hospital, established in 1994, is yet to receive environmental clearance and, moreover, it does not have any effluent treatment plant (ETP). 
He said they issued a notice on the hospital authorities six months ago to set up an ETP and get environmental clearance but to no avail.    
Zafor said hospital waste was polluting the environment and the lake surrounding the hospital and Bangladesh Television, Chittagong centre.
