Unopposed election of 153 MPs legal: Speaker
The 153 lawmakers have been elected unopposed in the January 5 national election in line with the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said today.
“Therefore, unopposed election of 153 lawmakers are legal and the January 5 election was held within the legal framework,” she said.
“The matter (MPs’ elected unopposed) cannot be compared to any stigma,” she said at a reception programme at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka today.
The programme was organised by Bangladesh Parliament Journalists Associations to give reception to the Speaker and ruling Awami League lawmaker Saber Hossain Chowdhury for being elected as chief of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association and Inter-Parliamentary Union respectively.
The democracy would have been halted if January 5 national election was not held, she said.
“We (Sharmin and Saber) both will try to resolve people’s problem and develop their living standards in the region as well as the world,” speaker said in the programme.
