UAE puts off execution of 3 Bangladeshis

The United Arab Emirates has postponed execution of death sentence of three Bangladeshi nationals convicted of murder of an Indian in 2009 over a personal dispute.

The convicts are -- Mohammed Nayeb Ali, of Pabna; Kamrul Islam, of Maymansingh; and Atique Ashraf Hossain, of Meherpur.

Their execution was earlier deferred for twice -- January 12 and January 21 this year in Sharjah province, AKM Mizanur Rahman, first secretary (labour) of Bangladesh Consulate in Dubai, told The Daily Star this evening.

The apex court of the UAE has postponed the execution allowing the convicts’ families to negotiate with the victim’s family regarding an appeal for pardon, he added.

According to the consulate official, Indian national named Taru, a Muslim from Bardhaman district in West Bengal, died after the three Bangladeshis assaulted him.

The victim took money from the three, who were staying illegally in the UAE at that time, in the name of collecting legal work permits for them, but Taru neither fulfilled his promise nor returned the money, causing the three furious, Mizanur mentioned.
