[WATCH] How hygienic is roadside sugarcane juice?

What can be more refreshing than a mug of icy cold sugarcane juice on a hot summer noon?

Often sold by vendors on carts by the road sides and at quite a reasonable prize, sugarcane juice is very popular among people from all walks of life as a refreshing drink.

A video that has been widely shared in the social media raises serious question on how hygienic this sugarcane juice is to be consumed.

Usually, the vendors squeeze the juice from the sugarcanes in front of the buyers, so the buyers are often not so critical on whether it is safe to drink the juice.

However, in the video, shared by Rubaiyat Ahsan Deep in his Facebook profile, a vendor is seen washing his utensils in water from a drain by the roadside before using them to prepare sugarcane juice for his customers.

Talking to The Daily Star, Rubaiyat said he saw the vendor cleaning his strainer and mug, which he uses to pour sugarcane juice in the customers’ glasses, in the water from a drain behind his cart at Shat Rasta intersection in Tejgaon yesterday.

“I was in a rush for a meeting, so I could not talk to the vendor and just managed to shoot a video for a few seconds and later posted in my Facebook profile out of social concern,” Rubaiyat said.
