Transport strike called off

Transport workers on Tuesday night called off their indefinite strike on five routes of Rangpur, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts.

District transport workers federation enforced the strike on Monday morning, protesting attacks, vandalism and torching of their branch office, pickup van owner's office and Patgram bus stand in Satmatha area of the city on Sunday night.

The strike, which began at 9:00am on Monday, was withdrawn around midnight on Tuesday, on assurance by the police administration of arresting the attackers and ensuring punishment to them.

Meanwhile, at least 20 people including three cops were injured in a clash between the two rival groups on Tuesday night.

Police and witnesses said, around 11:30pm, a group backed by Rangpur Motor Owners' Association went to Satmatha area and tried to occupy Patgram bus stand in the same area.

Their rivals locked in a clash when the motor workers reached the spot.

Being informed, police rushed to the spot and fired four shots and eleven teargas-shells to bring the situation under control.

At least 20 people, including police constables Shaheen Hossain, Rafiqul Islam and Sohel Rana were injured.
