Train movement on Dhaka-Chittagong route resumes around 6:00pm after it had remained suspended since this morning as pickets put barricades on rail tracks during the dawn-to-dusk hartal (shutdown) in Narayanganj.

The hartal ended around the same time, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Narayanganj District Lawyers’ Association enforced the hartal in protest against the killings of seven people including senior lawyer Chandan Sarkar and Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) panel councillor Nazrul Islam.

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of Nazrul, Chandan and five others were recovered in Shitalakkhya river.

The railway authorities were forced to halt the train services on the route after pro-hartal activists put barricades on the tracks at Fatullah railway station just after a Narayanganj-bound train from Dhaka reached the station, said Golam Mostafa, stationmaster of Narayanganj station.

The train services remain suspended till 11:30am when the report was filed, reports our Narayanganj correspondent.

Wearing black badges, the lawyers, cultural activists and NCC councillors brought out separate processions at different parts of the city since 8:00am demanding immediate arrest and exemplary punishment to the killers.

No motorised vehicle is seen plying roads in the district since morning.

The NCC councillors and its staffs went on work abstention since morning and also held a protest rally in front of the NCC building to press home the same demand.

NCC Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy also participated in the rally.

Sammilita Sangskritik Jote, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, Khela Ghar and other socio- cultural fronts also brought out protest processions spontaneously that marched different streets in the city.

Business establishments and government and non-government offices in the city remain shut following the hartal.

No untoward incident occurred in the district till 11:30am when the report was filed.
