Attorney General Mahbubey Alam passes away after contracting Covid-19

Attorney General Mahbubey Alam today passed away while undergoing treatment at Dhaka's Combined Military Hospital (CMH) after contracting Covid-19 earlier.

The eminent jurist breathed his last at 7:25pm this evening, his son Sumon Mahbub confirmed to The Daily Star.

Mahbubey Alam's namaz-e-janaza will be held at Supreme Court premises at 11:00am tomorrow. He will be buried at Mirpur Buddhijibi Graveyard later on the same day, SCBA President Advocate AM Amin Uddin told The Daily Star.

Mahbubey Alam was admitted to CMH on September 4 after being diagnosed with Covid-19.

He was taken to the ICU on the morning of September 18 after his health condition suddenly deteriorated.

Law Minister Anisul Huq expressed profound shock at the demise of Mahbubey Alam and prayed for salvation and eternal peace of his departed soul.

The minister also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family members of Mahbubey Alam.

Advocate Mahbubey Alam was appointed as the attorney general, the country's top law official, on January 13, 2009.

Also a Supreme Court lawyer, Alam served as the additional attorney general from November 15, 1998 to October 4, 2001.

Born in Mouchhamandra village under Louhajang upazila in Munshiganj on February 17, 1949, he completed his BA (Hons) in political science and MA in public administration from Dhaka University.

He also attained two diplomas in constitutional law, and parliamentary institutions and procedures in 1979 from the Institute of Constitutional and Parliamentary Studies (ICPS) in New Delhi, India.

Alam started practising in the High Court in 1975 and became a lawyer of the Appellate Division in 1980.

He was enrolled as a senior Supreme Court lawyer in 1998 and was elected member to the Bangladesh Bar Council in 2004.

He was also elected the president of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) in 2005-2006. Earlier, he served as its general secretary in 1993-1994.
