Mymensingh Jubo League man killed, 2 AL men held

Two local Awami League activists were held today for alleged involvement in the post-election murder of a Jubo League leader in Trishal municipality of Mymensingh.

The detainees were Chand Miah, 35, and Mazharul Islam Sumon, 30, loyal to AL’s rebel candidate Jahidul Islam, reports our local correspondent.

The victim, Md Parvez, 23, supporter of the defeated AL nominated candidate Jahidul Islam Jewel Sarker was hacked to death last night, party sources and police said.

About 20 miscreants attacked Parvez while he was on his way home around 10:20pm, killing him on the spot, said Moniruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Trishal Police Station.

Defeated AL’s rebel mayor candidate Jahidul Islam alleged that activists of the victorious AL quarter were behind the attack. However, newly-elected mayor ABM Anisuzzaman junked such claims.

Protesting the killing, Jubo League municipality unit brought out a procession and blocked Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around 11:00pm today.
